🌺 How Durga Puja Began — History and Legend

According to Hindu tradition, the origin of Durga Puja is closely connected with the story of Goddess Durga and Mahishasura.

Mahishasura was a powerful demon who received a boon after performing severe penance. He became extremely powerful and began troubling the gods and humans. The gods realized that they needed a divine power to defeat him.

According to the Devi Mahatmya (Durga Saptashati), the divine energies of the gods came together and manifested as Goddess Durga. The gods gave her various divine weapons. Durga then fought Mahishasura in a great battle and finally defeated and killed him.

Her victory represents the triumph of good over evil and the victory of divine power over injustice.

🪔 The Tradition of Sharadiya Durga Puja

The Durga Puja celebrated during autumn, especially in Bengal, developed over many centuries through religious traditions and regional customs.

One famous religious tradition tells that Lord Rama worshipped Goddess Durga before fighting Ravana. This autumn worship is traditionally known as Akal Bodhan, meaning the awakening or invocation of the goddess at an unusual time. Different versions of this story appear in later religious literature and regional traditions.

🌸 Durga Puja in Bengal

In Bengal, Durga Puja was initially associated largely with royal families, zamindars, and wealthy households. Over time, the celebration expanded beyond private family worship.

Eventually, Barowari and Sarbojanin Durga Puja became popular, allowing entire communities to participate.

Today, Durga Puja is not only a religious festival but also a major celebration of Bengali culture, art, music, food, craftsmanship, and community life.
